Windsurfing in Fiji
Another great water sport that is definitely worth trying out when in Fiji is windsurfing. With ideal water conditions, big waves and a year round breeze, windsurfing in Fiji is fast becoming a very popular activity for all to enjoy. Today, most of Fiji’s hotels and resorts offer windsurfing for their guests. If you do not know how to windsurf don’t worry, many resorts hire instructors to teach their guests how to windsurf.
The Mamanuca Group is an excellent destination to go windsurfing in, with some of the best waves found near the tiny island of Namotu. Namotu is home to the famous Namotu Lefts, Wilkes Passage and Swimming Pool surf breaks. This 1.5 hectare island also has a beautiful holiday resort, the Namotu Island Resort, which is perfect for an intimate getaway or a fun filled adventure.
Some great windsurfing can also be done around of the tiny island of Nananu-i-Ra, which lies 3 km off the coast of Viti Levu. Just 3.5 sq km, the waters here are ideal for windsurfers with the winds here ranging around 10 knots or more nearly everyday.
The best time to come windsurfing here is between the months of June and August. To hire some windsurfing gear before you head out here, visit Ellington Harbour.
The Coral Coast on Viti Levu also has some good windsurfing opportunities especially around the Sigatoka area. Easy to reach if you are staying in Nadi or in Suva, Sigatoka is also Fiji’s only beach break. Some of the best windsurfing can be done near the mouth of the Sigatoka River. Most an interesting area to tour, the Sigatoka Valley is definitely worth visiting to buy traditional Fijian pottery. If you wish to stay in the area, there are a couple of hotels found here as well as a pharmacy, clinic, supermarket, post office and mosque. There are a few of ATMs in town as well.
