Getting to and Around in Kadavu Group
The Kadavu Group is located some 45 miles south of the capital, Suva and the main island of Viti Levu. Comprising of three larger islands and a number of small isles, this island group is famous for its amazing diving and lush rainforests. Accessible by air and sea, getting to the Kadavu Group is quite easy.
Air Fiji offers daily flights to Kadavu from Nadi, via the Nausori Airport, while Sun Air flies directly from Nadi to Kadavu in about 45 minutes. The flights to Kadavu are regular and usually depart on time, unless there is bad weather. A wonderful flight with some superb views of the islands below, in Kadavu you will land at the Namalata Airstrip in Vunisea. A simple airstrip, Vunisea is a small town with a police station, hospital and post office located here.
If you like you can also visit Kadavu by ferry service from Suva. The MV Bulou-ni-ceva is a cargo ferry, which charges $42 per person one way. Not very reliable, the service of this ferry is often times irregular and can take anywhere between four hours to fourty-eight hours to get to Kadavu. Stopping at Vunisea, and the towns of Nabukelevu-i-Ra and Kavala Bay, the ferry ride can at times be pretty bad, especially if you encounter poor weather along the way.
Getting around the main island of Kadavu itself is not difficult, but the roads here are often not in good shape. The few roads that are good are limited to the Vunisea area. Moving around town is easy enough, as Vunisea is rather small. To get to your hotel, most resorts will pick you up by boat from the Namalata Airstrip. Often a short ride away, these boat rides can often be quite expensive if your resort does not provide you with free return boat transfers.
