Things to do - Kadavu Group

Kadavu Parrots Rugged and secluded, are two words that best describe the Kadavu Group. Sitting some 100 km south of Viti Levu, this island group is an impressive place to visit. On the northwestern coast of the main island of Kadavu sits the 838-meter high peak of Nubukelevu (Mount Washington), while on the eastern side of the island lie lush rainforests, home to a wide variety of birds including the native Kadavu honey eater, the Kadavu fantail, the Kadavu musk parrot and the velvet fruit dove.

A wonderful island to explore, especially for nature lovers and bird watchers, the rainforests on Kadavu are verdant and profuse with many hiking and walking trails a well as stunning waterfalls. Before you go for a hike, ask the locals for some tips on which trails to take. While you are exploring Kadavu, you may come across a number of isolated villages, which are extremely traditional in nature. If you would like to visit one of these villages, it is important to speak to the turaga-ni-koro first before you go in. Remove your hat when you are in the village and do not carry anything on your shoulders, as doing so would be disrespectful.

If you are staying in a resort on Kadavu, you can also enjoy a number of water sports along with kayaking, surfing (at Cape Washington only, near Mt. Nubukelevu), beach volleyball and snorkeling.

Diving in the Kadavu Group

Home to the world-renowned Great Astrolabe Reef, the diving around Kadavu is some of the best in the world. Located along the eastern area of the Kadavu Group, you will find many varieties of vibrantly colored hard and soft corals in this reef, amid steep vertical drop-offs, unexplored caves and an astonishing array of marine life. Home to many brilliant tropical fish and lots of reef sharks, the diving in the Kadavu is truly something special. The underwater visibility here is excellent as well, however bad weather and trade winds can often make diving difficult.

You can also go diving in the Soso Passage and the Naiqoro Passage, which play host to many manta rays and sharks, with some nice underwater caves to explore. The Mamalata Reefs along the northwest of Kadavu also offer some great dives.
