Lomaiviti Group Islands

Lomaviti Group Laidback and tranquil, the Lomaiviti Group of islands sits just off the eastern coast of Viti Levu in Fiji. Rustic and idyllic, this island group is made up of 9 main islands as well as a number of smaller isles. Covering a total area of 411 sq km, the Lomaiviti archipelago is known for its rich history, excellent diving and picturesque indigenous villages.

A 15 minute flight from the capital Suva, the main island in the Lomaiviti Group is Ovalau. Definitely worth a visit as there are plenty of activities to enjoy out here, the principal city of Ovalau is Levuka, the former colonial capital of Fiji. The other main islands in this archipelago include; Koro, Gau, Wakaya, Makogai, Batiki, Moturiki, Nairai, Naigani, Namenalala and Yanuca Lailai. Caqelai and Leleuvia are two tiny coral islands that sit just south of Ovalau and are superb getaways in their own right.

What gives the Lomaiviti Group its appeal is its peaceful surroundings, coupled with its excellent dry sunny weather. Not as touristy as the other regions of Fiji, the Lomaiviti Group makes for a wonderful vacation retreat especially if you want to get away from the crowds.

The first European to sight the Lomaiviti Group was Captain William Bligh in 1789 while sailing to Timor after the mutiny on the HMS Bounty. In 1792, Captain Bligh came here again to complete his exploration of the area.

One of the best reasons to visit the Lomaiviti Group is to take advantage of some excellent diving opportunities here. The reef system of the Lomaiviti Group is spread out over some 400 sq km giving you ample spots to dive and explore. Namenalala Island, which sits close to Vanua Levu, has some superb diving and gorgeous beaches to relax on.

The most developed island in the Lomaiviti Group is Ovalau. Here you can find plenty of accommodations, tour operators, transport and a number of historical sights.
