Getting to & Around Levuka, Ovalau
Vacationing in Levuka is fantastic for those looking to escape the more touristy regions of Fiji. Picturesque and quaint, this town still has many remnants of its colonial past, when it was once the capital of Fiji. Getting to Levuka is quite easy with Air Fiji having two daily flights from Suva to Levuka. A 15 minute trip costing $55 one way, Air Fiji leaves from the Nausori International Airport to land at the Bureta airstrip, some 40 minutes from Levuka.
Located on the south western side of Ovalau, the Bureta airstrip has a simple runway with a small terminal building located next to it. This airstrip received a major overhaul in 2005 to bring it up to international standards, and to cope with the growing number of tourists now landing here daily. To get to and from the airport to Levuka you have to take a mini bus or taxi. You can catch a mini bus from outside the Air Fiji Travel Center from 7 am to 4 pm.
You can also get to Levuka by boat/ferry service. Patterson Brothers Shipping offers a ferry service from Levuka to Suva via Natovi for around $ 22. The ferry leaves at 4 am daily and is a 4 hour ride. If you want you can stay on the boat at Natovi to get to Bau on Vanua Levu as well. If you wish to travel by ferry service you need to book your trip one day in advance.
Getting around Levuka is very easy and you can even tour the entire town on foot. A taxi service is available here and can take you up to Lovoni village and Rukuruku. The taxi stand can be found across from the Whale’s Tale Restaurant on Beach Street.
