Getting to & Around Taveuni

Getting to & Around Taveuni Located a stone’s throw away from Vanua Levu and close to the main island of Viti Levu, Taveuni is fast becoming a tourist haven. Ideal for those who want to explore and enjoy nature, this island has a much to offer. Easy to get to, you can arrive in Taveuni by either air or boat. The flight to Taveuni from both Suva and Nadi is quite stunning with some fantastic aerial views of the reefs below.

From Nadi, both Sun Air and Air Fiji have daily flights to Taveuni, while from Suva, Air Fiji flies here twice a day, and Sun Air flies in on Mondays and Fridays. The Matei Airport is the main entry point into Taveuni and is located on the southern tip of the island. Open from 8 am to 4pm, both Sun Air and Air Fiji have offices here.

If you are traveling on a budget getting to Taveuni can be quite costly, so a good alternative is to get here by boat. A lot of travelers, who have at least a week to spare, often catch the ferry service from Suva to Taveuni. Another route which is frequently used is to take a ferry from Taveuni to Savusavu or Buca Bay and then from Vanua Levu catch a flight to either Nadi or Suva. Beachcomber Cruises and Consort Shipping offer ferries to Taveuni from Suva via Savusavu. Grace Ferry runs from Savusavu to Naqara on Taveuni regularly.

There are two ports of entry for boats into Taveuni. The Government Wharf roughly 1km from Waiyevo is meant for larger ferries, while the Korean Wharf is meant for smaller boats.

Once you are in Taveuni, the island is quite simple to get around. There is just one main road here which stretches all the way from Lavena in the east to Navakawau in the south. The cheapest way to get around is by bus, which also gives you the chance to mingle with the locals.  However, the only drawback to using a bus is that they have no fixed time. Taxis are also an affordable travel option in Taveuni. You can hire a taxi for the whole day for under $100. If you like you can rent a car or 4WD and get around on your own. In Naqara, Budget Rent a Car is open from 8am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday.
