Matei & Northern Taveuni
Within easy reach of the Matei Airport, Northern Taveuni is a mainly residential area with lots of expats and foreigners living here. Matei is the main town in this part of the island and has a number of hotels and accommodations to stay at, along with a few dive operators and some good restaurants. A supermarket can also be found here, with Swiss Fiji Divers providing internet access for an hourly fee. The Beverly Beach or Prince Charles Beach here offers some good snorkeling.
Hotels & Resorts in Matei
From Matei, you can also access the offshore islands of Qamea, Laucala and Matagi, which lie northeast of Taveuni. Both Qamea and Laucala sit inside a lagoon, while Matagi sits close by. Matagi and Laucala are privately owned islands and home to two exclusive luxury resorts, which are located on gorgeous white sandy beaches. The island of Laucala is the property of the late Malcolm Forbes, the US millionaire. Qamea is the largest of the three islands and is home to the beautiful Qamea Beach Club, a top notch beach resort.
If you are interested in staying in Matei, you have a number of budget and mid-range hotels to choose from. All located conveniently close to the airport, many travelers coming to Taveuni often stay here, as the facilities provided are comfortable and pleasant. However, if you have cash to spare, there are a four top end resorts to stay at in this area as well. The Garden of Eden is a gorgeous house which you can rent while you stay on Taveuni.
Places to Eat in Matei
If you are looking for a good place to eat, Island Pizza is the place to go. The pizzas here are reasonably priced, with delivery services as well. For a gourmet meal, head to the restaurant at the Maravu Plantation Resort. The Coconut Gove Café is another great place to visit for a nice evening out.
