Things to do in Taveuni
A tropical island paradise, Taveuni is a fantastic retreat. Covered by verdant and dense forestation and home to many exotic flowers and plants, the landscape here is natural and pristine. You can find plenty of things to do in Taveuni to keep yourself busy for days on end.
Snokerling & Diving
One of the most popular activities to enjoy while you are here has to be snorkeling and diving. Renowned the world over as a famous dive zone, Taveuni has some truly spectacular diving sites. The Somosomo Strait located between Taveuni and Vanua Levu is home to a plethora of fish and marine life. Each dive here is often better than the next, with beautiful coral and a multitude of tropical fish enjoy. Sharks and turtles have also been spotted out here and in November if you are lucky, you may even get the opportunity to see a pilot whale swim by.
A somewhat difficult dive zone for the novice diver due to the strong currents found here, expert divers find the Somosomo Strait the ideal dive destination. Visit the beautiful Rainbow Reef on Vanua Levu, which is easily accessible from here or take a drift-dive along the Great White Wall. Some other popular dive sites around Taveuni include Cabbage Patch, The Ledge, Yellow Grotto, The Zoo, Blue Ribbon Eel Reef, The Pinnacle, Vuna Reef and Annie’s Bommie. Dive conditions are near perfect here throughout the year, except in January and February, when plankton grow.
Hiking in Taveuni
Hiking is another popular activity on Taveuni with a number of hiking and trekking trails found all over the island. The Lavena Coastal Walk and Tavoro Falls offer some wonderful hiking opportunities with well marked tracks to follow. For those who are serious hikers, the Vidawa Forest Walk, the trek up to Lake Tagimaucia and the Des Voeux ascent are all challenging climbs.
Birds Watching
Taveuni is also a great place to come bird watching in Fiji. Home to more than 100 species of birds, on Taveuni you can catch a glimpse of the rare orange dove, the silktail, the kula parrot, the Fiji goshawk and the wattled honeyeater.
