Around Savusavu

Savusavu Around Savusavu there are plenty of places to explore as well. The Waisali Rainforest Reserve, the Nukubolu Village and the Tunuloa Peninsula, all offer the independent traveler much to see and do. To get around Savusavu, there are plenty of taxis for hire as well as buses. If you like you can even rent a car or four-wheel drive jeep and drive around.

Located north of Savusavu is the Waisali Rainforest Reserve. A lush and dense rainforest, there are not too many trails to trek here, however, the flora is extremely gorgeous and is definitely worth seeing. There is a beautiful waterfall in the reserve as well, which is a popular place with the locals. To enter the park, head north out of Savusavu along the road to Labasa. Though the entrance is not properly marked, most bus and taxi drivers know the way.

Nukubolu village lies north of Savusavu in the mountains. Only the remains of this village stand here today, after its people were defeated following a war between the Nukubolu and Cakaudrove tribes. The remains of the Nukubolu village are well preserved and are an interesting sight to see. Often a trip to this reserve is combined with a tour to the Waisali Rainforest Reserve.

The Tunuloa Peninsula lies in the southeast of Vanua Levu and is a lush scenic region to explore. Offering some good bird watching and hiking opportunities, you can find many old homesteads here along with copra plantations and thriving forests. Do keep in mind though that there are no restaurants here or shops, so pack a lunch for yourself before you head out here. On this peninsula you will find Buca Bay, home to the rare and endangered silktail bird. From Buca Bay head north up to the village of Dakuniba. Just outside the village you can find several mysterious petroglyphs inscribed on boulders, but sadly no one knows what they say or mean. You can also access the Rainbow Reef from this village, but it is more easily accessible from Taveuni.

Around Savusavu, there are also a quite few paces to stay at. The Naqere Estate, the La Dolce Vita, Hannibal's Eco Adventure Resort, the Lomalagi Resort and the Rainbow Reef Resort, all offer some first-rate accommodations.
