Getting to & Around Vanua Levu
Located north of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu offers tourists a more traditional Fiji to explore. The landscape here is lush and beautiful and with some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world found here at Rainbow Reef. Vanua Levu gives tourists a more traditional Fiji to explore with a number of indigenous Fijian towns and villages situated out here. Savusavu and Labasa are the two main towns on the island with a majority of the population living here.
Getting to Vanua Levu is pretty easy and straightforward. You can either get here by air or by boat from Viti Levu. If you are traveling by air you can leave either from the Nadi International Airport or from the Nausori International Airport in Suva. A pleasant trip with superb views, Sun Air and Air Fiji both offer two daily flights from Nadi to Savusavu. From Suva, Sun Air offers one daily flight to Labasa, while Air Fiji offers two daily flights to Savusavu. Both airlines also offer two flights everyday between Savusavu and Taveuni. If you are planning on traveling by air, it is important that you book your seats in advance, as these flights get full pretty quickly. Traveling to Vanua Levu by air is affordable and time saving.
If you want, you can travel to Vanua Levu by boat as well. However, keep in mind that a boat trip can often be quite a long journey. Patterson Brothers Shipping, Consort Shipping and Beachcomber Cruises, all offer ferry services to Vanua Levu from Suva, Lautoka, Taveuni, Ellington Wharf and Ovalau.
Once you are in Vanua Levu, the best way to get around the island is by renting your own car or vehicle such as a four-wheel drive. The roads on Vanua Levu are not always well maintained and this means driving through some often bumpy terrain with lots of wandering animals and cattle. Another way to get around Vanua Levu is by bus, which services all the main towns and routes on the island.
