savusavu
Savusavu is the second largest town on Vanua Levu, but is the main tourist hub on the island. Sitting in a peninsula across Savusavu Bay in southern Vanua Levu, Savusavu is a quiet town, offering tourists some of the most spectacular sunsets and vistas in Fiji. With a population made up of indigenous Fijians, Indo Fijians and a number of expatriates Savusavu has a charm and character of its own.
Initially heavily dependent on copra production, today, Savusavu now looks to tourism to drive its economy. A majority of the townspeople here are now involved in tourism-based businesses to secure their future. Nicknaming itself 'the hidden paradise', Savusavu is now serviced by Fiji's two main airlines as well a number of ferries, making it easily accessible and a great place to use as a base camp for exploring the rest of Vanua Levu. And since Savusavu is located within a sheltered bay with two marinas, it is also becoming a popular stopover for yachts and boats cruising the region.
Built along one main road, Savusavu is pretty easy to explore on foot, so you really can't get lost out here. And even though none of the streets have names, the best way to get around is by remembering landmarks. For a map of Savusavu and its surrounding area, you can get one from the Yacht Shop on the Copra Shed Marina.
Built in 1880, the Copra Shed Marina was originally built for the copra mills on the island, but now it has been reconstructed to serve as a tourist center in town. Here you can book your flight or boat, do your laundry, write an email, have a beer, buy postcards and even grab a quick bite to eat. Hot showers and toilets are also available here. Near the marina you can also find the town's hot springs, but be careful, as they are extremely hot
There are two banks in Savusavu, the ANZ Bank and Westpac, both of which are located near the bus stop. The post office sits on the eastern end of town near Buca Bay Road along with the hospital.
