About Viti Levu
Covering an area of 10,400 sq km, Viti Levu or Great Fiji is the largest of the Fijian islands. Home of the national capital Suva, Viti Levu is also the administrative, political and industrial hub of the country. The fifth largest island in Oceania, around 75% of Fiji’s population can be found living here. Roughly circular in shape with a mountainous interior, Viti Levu is thought to be the oldest of Fiji’s 300 plus islands.
While many tourists use Viti Levu as a base camp when exploring the rest of Fiji, what they don’t realize is that this island has its own unique charms and sights. What Viti Levu lacks in idyllic beaches, it more than makes up for with its many interesting places to see and tons of activities to enjoy. For those who are adventurous head north of Nadi to the Koroyanitu Heritage Park. Here you can enjoy some truly breathtaking views of the nearby Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. If you are interested in the more touristy sights, visit Suva with its many markets and wonderful colonial architecture. While here don’t forget to tour the superb Fiji Museum, which offers a wonderful insight into the history, culture and lifestyle of the people here.
While on Viti Levu you can also go kayaking or rafting through the Namosi Highlands, or if you prefer, just head out to Natadola Beach along the Coral Coast to spend a relaxing day at the seashore. For a snorkeling and diving adventure, visit the tiny isle of Nananu-i-Ra which lies along the northern coast of the island. The Sigatoka Sand Dunes, the Tavuni Hill Fort, the Ka Levu Cultural Center and the village of Navala are some other wonderful places to visit while on Viti Levu.
The great thing about staying on this island is that plenty of hotels and resorts can be found all over the place. Most of the accommodations here are located in and around Nadi or Suva as well as along Queens Road and the Coral Coast. Nadi has wide range of accommodations and is where most tourists usually in arrive in Fiji. An abundance of hotels can be found in this bustling city from dorm-style budget accommodations to luxury resorts and five-star hotels. The Nadi International Airport is the main entry point into the country; however some tourists and businessmen prefer to use the more subdued Nausori International Airport in Suva.
