Getting to and Around in Viti Levu

Viti Levu With Nadi International Airport being the main gateway for travelers in and out of Fiji, getting to Viti Levu is pretty easy and straightforward. Most tourists visiting Fiji usually land at the busy Nadi Airport, which also acts as a key hub for other countries in the South Pacific rim. Serving around roughly 1.2 million visitors a year, this airport is one of the busiest in the region. Situated 9 km north of central Nadi, it serves both international and domestic flights.

Nausori International Airport is located in Suva and is mostly used by tourists or businessmen who wish to visit the capital. Generally used for domestic flights, only a few international airlines land here. Situated 23 km from downtown Suva, Air Fiji is based at Nausori Airport.

Once you get to Viti Levu, getting around the island is pretty easy and cheap as the transportation network is quite good. Local buses are an inexpensive and effective way of visiting the various cities and towns in Viti Levu and also give you the chance to mingle with Fiji’s friendly locals. Scheduled bus services also run all over Fiji with inter city buses operating several times a day. Express buses link the 3 main towns of Nadi, Suva and Lautoka and both run on Kings and Queens Roads as well. If you have pre-booked a room, most hotels offer free pick and drop services from the airport.

Lots of tourist bus companies now also run on Viti Levu. Feejee Experience is one of the many local transport companies that let tourists sightsee the entire island, and visit all the popular destinations. A fun way to get around especially if you are pressed for time, you can see all of Viti Levu’s main attractions in just four days!

Mini buses and small trucks also service locals between Nadi and Suva along Queens Roads and the Coral Coast. Taxis are found all over Viti Levu and are a fast way to get around. However they do not always use their meters so it is advisable to confirm a price before you get in.

Easy to explore on your own getting around Viti Levu by yourself is not difficult. If you ever get lost, you will always find a friendly local who is more than willing to help. If you have a few days to spend on the island, it is a good idea to rental a car or a motorbike, but if you wish to travel inland a four wheel drive is more appropriate. There are many reputable car rental agencies on Viti Levu with Avis, Hertz and Budget Rent a Car all having branches at Nadi Airport. To rent a motorcycle, you will have to do so either in Nadi or Suva. For the more health conscious tourist, renting a bicycle is a good idea as the roads on Viti Levu are flat and straight, offering some wonderful scenic views along the way.
