Southern Viti Levu

Viti LevuSouthern Viti Levu is a great region to head for, to enjoy the best that Viti Levu has to offer. Including the Coral Coast, some other highlights of this area are Momi Bay, Robinson Crusoe Island, Natadola Beach, Yanuca, Sigatoka Valley, the Sigatoka Sand Dunes, Tavuni Hill Fort, Korotogo, the Kula Eco Park, Pacific Harbour and the offshore islands of Beqa, Yanuca and Vatulele. With so much to see and do, touring Southern Viti Levu makes for a wonderful adventure.

Momi Bay

Along Queens Road, south of Nadi, Momi Bay is a wonderful area to drive through. Farmland and plantations lie on either side of the road, with many temples and mosques also found here as well. While in Momi Bay, visit the Momi Guns, a World War II battery that has been restored. Here, you will find camouflaged bunkers and historical pictures of the important role Fiji played in WWII. The Seashell Surf and Dive Resort also sits in Momi Bay and provides easy access to some good surfing and diving offshore in the Mamanuca Group.

Robinson Crusoe Island

The Robinson Crusoe Island also known as Likuri. Recognized as Fiji’s best party island, the Robinson Crusoe Island Resort, a budget resort is located here. This resort provides comfortable accommodations with a whole host of activities to enjoy ranging from windsurfing to Natadola boat trips.

Natadola Beach

The best beach on Viti Levu, the idyllic Natadola Beach lies a few miles from Momi Bay. Relatively isolated, this beach is a wonderful escape from Nadi. Great for body surfing, snorkeling or windsurfing, take care while swimming here, as the currents can get quite strong. Natadola Beach also has a superb resort to stay at, the Natadola Beach Resort. For adults only, this resort does not allow children under 16 to stay here.

Yanuca

Some 50 km from Nadi, the tiny island of Yanuca is famous for the Coral Coast Scenic Railway. Offering some beautifully scenic rides to the Natadola Beach area, the Coral Coast Scenic Railway is a14 km long trip past sugar plantations, villages and forests, taking about 75 minutes. Great for the entire family to enjoy, a ticket for the journey costs $75 and includes a barbeque lunch at the Natadola Beach Resort. The huge Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort is also on Yanuca and is a terrific resort for the whole family. With 436 rooms, some other features of this resort include a teenagers club and a little chiefs club.

Sigatoka Area

Located near the mouth of the Sigatoka River, Sigatoka sits some 61 km southeast of Nadi. Primarily a farming community, this town is home to Fiji’s only beach break and the surfing here is top class. Some 4.5 km west of town are the famous Sigatoka Sand Dunes along the beach near the Sigatoka River mouth. These large windblown dunes rise as high as 60 meters in some places, and have been forming for millions of years. Pottery pieces and human skeletal remains have also been discovered here implying that a village was once near these dunes a long time ago. The fertile Sigatoka Valley is often referred to as Fiji’s salad bowl, as many fruits, vegetables, cereals, peanuts and sugarcane are grown here. While much of the produce ends up in local markets; some fruits and vegetables are exported to the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The Sigatoka Valley is also known for its pottery, with one of Fiji’s most famous potter Diana Tugea living here.

Tavuni Hill Fort

Located in the Sigatoka area, the Tavuni Hill Fort is an interesting sight. A defensive Tongan fort that has been restored, Tavuni sits on a limestone ridge along the Sigatoka River so that the surrounding area can be easily surveyed. Snacks, drinks and souvenirs are available here, along with a guided tour of the fort.

Korotogo & the Kula Eco Park

A quiet town with a few accommodations and eateries, Korotogo is part of the Coral Coast. This area is picturesque with scenic bays, coral reefs, and lovely beaches. Near Kototogo is the Kula Eco Park a wildlife reserve created to protect Fiji’s endangered penegrine falcon and the crested and banded iguanas. Hawksbill sea turtles, musk parrots, honeyeaters, fruit bats, and a variety of birds can be found here.

Pacific Harbour

Some 49 km west of Suva, Pacific Harbour is an up market destination that acts a convenient escape from the capital. Home to the Pacific Harbour International Resort, there are plenty of activities one can enjoy here including sailing, windsurfing and glass bottom boat rides. There is also a golf and country club here as well. A kilometer east of Pacific Harbour is the Fijian Cultural Center and Marketplace, for those interested in seeing traditional Fijian village.

Offshore Islands

Beqa, Yanuca and Vatulele are three tiny islands that lie just of Southern Viti Levu. The Beqa Lagoon here has a number of well-known dive sites (Side Street, Frigate Pass and Caesar’s Rocks), with some world class surfing at Frigate Passage. On the island of Vatulele you can find some interesting archaeological sites.
